Shepton Mallet is a small rural market town about 18 miles south of Bristol. Nestling in a fold of the beautiful Mendip Hills in eastern Somerset, Shepton Mallet attractively combines an ancient market town and a modern industrial community.
Shepton Mallet u3a (registered charity number 1158730) was established in July 2011 and membership is over 130, with many activities.
No academic qualifications are required to join. There is no formal teaching or learning and no examinations. Shepton Mallet u3a, in particular, comprises a lively and friendly group of people with a wide variety of skills and life experiences. By forming and joining interest groups they can share their knowledge, learn from others and develop new interests. It is not just about learning, new friendships are made and Shepton Mallet u3a aims for all activities to take place in a friendly social setting. There is no specific age limit but members are in their ‘third age’ i.e. retired or approaching retirement, and most meetings take place during the day.
Many activities take place in Shepton Mallet–in member’s houses and also at The Shrubbery Hotel and the Salvation Army Hall. Where there is support, we establish groups in local villages and there are groups in Oakhill, Doulting, Evercreech and Prestleigh.
Our three walking groups provide the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful countryside around us and, for the less energetic, the Munch Club meets monthly for lunch at various local hostelries. We also arrange regular outings to places of interest.
Monthly coffee-and-speaker meetings happen on the first Thursday of the month at the Salvation Army Hall. Each week on the remaining Thursdays, we hold informal coffee mornings from 10:30am onwards in Dobbies café.
New members are welcome and for more information on Shepton Mallet u3a please follow the links on the website.
